Some time in the early 2000's (back when I still believed in climate change), I remember hearing from some noodle of a geography professor that Siberia would be "in flames" by 2017 because of methane off-gassing. This really put the fear of God into me.
Of course, 2017 came and went and as far as I know, Siberia is still under ice and snow most of the year.
It's a relief to find out that yet another doomsday prediction is false, but then you have to reconcile yourself with the fact that most of the rest of the world is insane.
So Linh is right about finding a "pocket of sanity." And yes, they do exist. They can be very, very small, though, so you have to pay attention to find them.
There's something about fire and fear.

"Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice."
(Robert Frost)
