I was thinking about the "meet the new boss, same as the old boss..." line from Won't Get Fooled Again by The Who before you mentioned the neverending cast of elites who inevitably fill whatever vacuums power creates when it "shifts".
I think the bottom line is that most humans don't like being hungry and will flock to the hands that feed best or at least promise to. It's quite a game. What kind of cult stands against peace, sanity, reality and basic human dignity yet has starry eyed proponents ready to use nukes? Democracy!
I think most people don't care so much about "freedom" as much as having food and protection. So they don't mind dictatorships if the economy goes well. But then again, nowadays we don't have all that much "freedom" in the "free West" anymore either.
